Ubuntu 8.4 and 9.4 live: wired connection not working

I tried running ubuntu live in both these versions and I could not catch internet. I have it via router , when applied ifconfig , the only interface shown was l0.
Then i configured /etc/network/interfaces with information about eth0 , but when doing ifconfig eth0 up , it says no such device.
Is there anything I could do to troubleshoot this?
Ubuntu live is my only hope for running my computer since my HDD is crashed and I cant load other OS, but I am disappointed that I cant get internet in it

Please, any answer.

Both versions you mention are "end of life" and completely unsupported. I recommend you try the current 12.10 release, featuring the latest kernel and hardware support, to see if you can get your connection working.

That detail aside, in order to get any meaningful help, you'll need to tell us your network "chipset" so we can recommend the correct driver.

Code:
lspci | grep Ethernet

Thank you. Indeed I ran Ubuntu 12.10 live and WooooooW ! It's so amazing.
Even my old webcam (which was compatible only with old versions of Windows) works!
I absolutely love it

Ubuntu has never had an 8.4 or 9.4. They are 8.04 (April, 4th month, 2008) and 9.04 (April, 4th month, 2009). 12 months of the year in Ubuntu speak go 01, 02, 03, 04, etc, 09, 10, etc.

That aside the repositories have moved, and for good reason, so you would need to make other changes in order to get the firmware from them. Better off just using a currently supported version.
