Trying to decide the right Distro for me.

I am running two Nvidia 7800 GTs in SLI on an DFI Infinity NF4 SLI board. I don't know if SLI translates well to Linux that so any info on that would be great as well.

My processor is also a dual core 3800+ so that may cause Linux trouble? My ram is OCZ PC 3800+.

I have a DVD writer as well which is an NEC DVD-RW ND-3540A.

If I left anything on the hardware size out please tell me.

Anyways, I want to run Linux on another partition on this machine. My comp has a 300 gig HD and isn't partitioned for the Linux yet but it can be partitioned now right?

Keep in mind I want to be able to run games through Cedega as well as surf the web with Firefox on whatever Linux distro you guys end up suggesting.

I think you going to have some issues with your Nvidia cards with linux on this one. I'd email Nvidia about possible builds for these cards before anything else. Looking at the rest of the system, Linux has no issues with 64bit and if you can find a happy medium with the video cards you would have a smoking linux rig. I'd look at using fedora core 4 or 5 just to get you use to feel of linux.

I have a 7800 GT under Arch, Nvidia drivers running with full 3D support (to play SOF 2 :P) and it took about 10 minutes to setup :) i dont see a problem between nvidia and Linux anymore (ATI is another story). Not sure about SLI support though.

Check the (hundreds? thousands?) other posts in this forum on distros, but your hardware seems ok. You can either partition before hand, or during the install (providing the distros installer has a partition manager, and most do)

If you want something interesting and new, try SUSE Linux 10.1, its the latest released popular linux distro, you can also take advantage of new 3D desktop (XgL), look at review here:

What if I bought another SATA 200 GB HD could I just install Linux on that and select which HD to boot from preboot?

EDIT: I also want to run a Linux that doesn't waste all my system resources on useless background crap like XP does. That is part of the reason I want to have a Linux install.

Yeah you could do that, Linux has a thing called a botoloader, that will run after your post/BIOS and yo ucan select which OS you want to boot. Windows XP HAS to be on the master i believe or it doesnt work, and it's best to install the bootloader to the MBR of the master disk.

As for wasting resources, Linux is far more configurable, at the cost of taking longer to configure some areas, you will have complete control over services etc.
