strictly on the user to know what they are doing. Sounds like this applies to you. Ubuntu on the other hand is based on debian and is more "bleeding edge" than Debian and does alot of Hand holding, however if you want to learn Linux Debian or Slackware is ideal
I fellow to what jens said. Choose whatever Distri you want you'll come back and yell oh... I sooo sad using Debian.
Try LINUX_XP, looks like xp and is easy as ubuntu and uses rpms.
As mentioned by RickH, this thread is now part of the megathread. To be honest, all opinions are entirely subjective, my advice is to try a few to see what you like.

Hi Lucas03, welcome to LinuxQuestions. If you scroll a bit in the Newbie forum or do a search on LQ.net (the search function works very good) you will find that this question is one of the FAQs (or most frequently asked questions). You will find many many useful thoughts and links if you look in two or three of them.
There is not one correct answer to this question, so prepare to read a bit and make your own decision which distribution to try first
Moved: This thread is more suitable in <Distributions> and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves in the Megathread :}.
