take that: Linux vs Hurd?
 

Okay I'm convinced this isn't just a "vs series thread", I'd like to hear your comments about Hurd, compared with "our" OS. Thousands of lines have been written to defend or attack Hurd, Linus Torvalds himself didn't hesitate to define it just garbage, but the FSF is still working on the project...

Would you consider installing and testing Hurd once it becomes more usable (I think right now it is already installable)? Do you think it is true it could give a more modern structure to unix?

ummm... i'm way out of date here... what version is hurd in? i got off the wagon somewhere in the torvalds vs. tannenbaum debates, and never really paid any attention to hurd again... does it work yet?

I think it's version 0.2 or something and they say it's already "usable" - don't know what that could mean - ;) . But I'm rather interested in the concept beyond it (apart from the quarrel micro/monolithic kernel) and I'd like to hear some of your opinions about that.

about the whole debate between the monolithic and micro kernels because that seems to be the basis that all discussions of Hurd start off with. I'm really curious to see a stable version (maybe by 2010 or so given the development rate) of Hurd released. I have looked around a bit after reading a couple books about the hisory of Linux and have yet to find anything more informative than the documentation on the GNU website.

On the other hand, I've heard enough quasi-religious babbling out of RMS over the last few months to make me wonder if he's not cracking up. His commentary on the true tragegy of September 11 being the obstructions to FSF's mission... whew. I wonder if this isn't a crusade that should've ended while the rumors were still positive. Clarification - I'm talking specifically about Hurd and not the Free Software Foundation in general.

it's interesting to read the early emails from linus to the newsgroup. they were expecting hurd to be out any day, that was over 10 years ago! if turd...whoops, hurd isn't dead yet, it may as well be.

Now that I'm somewhat more comfortable with various unices I wouldn't mind at least having a look at Hurd. It's a shame that you can't make multiple choices on the poll - I'd go with all but the top one.

I'd like to have a look at it once it's stable.
But I don't think it's ever gonna get there.
I'm quite happy with Linux, it'd just be for curiosities sake.
