There are several links to reviews on http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=salix
Unfortunately, I can't give you my review as I have not written it yet. ;)

I've dabbled with it. To be brief--

* Installation is more difficult than Ubuntu. Familiarity with a Slackware-style install will help, but is not necessary.

* Repositories are smaller. gslapt and slapt-get are the package management tools, similiar to apt and synaptic.

* 100% compatible with Slackware, so you can grab packages from slackbuilds.org.

* DE's include XFCE, LXDE, KDE, and fluxbox. Others can be downloaded from slackbuilds.org

It's more hands-on that Ubuntu, but it's light and I enjoyed it.

As someone's whose main distro has been Ubuntu, do you think I would have trouble switching to it once I got it installed?

I think I have to disagree here. In my eyes a 100% compatibility would mean that you can use it like Slackware after install. You can't. Nowadays slackpkg is one of the most used tools in Slackware when it is up to install or update software that is in Slackware's repository. At least I think that. Read this from the Salix OS FAQ:

Can I use slackpkg with Salix?

You can, but you really shouldn't. slackpkg is a package manager that was designed to manage packages from a single Slackware repository and nothing but that. If you use it in Salix, the least that could happen is that the few packages in the Salix repositories that are replacing Slackware packages (like the sysvinit-scripts package) will be replaced by their Slackware counterparts and you can expect some Salix customizations to disappear. The worse that could happen is that you'll remove all Salix packages from your installation and you'll be left with original Slackware packages only, which will make the system mostly unusable. So, don't!

It's a breeze once you get it installed.

Interesting, I did not know this.

I've just got the new version of Salix and give it 9/10 in my review. It all just worked. The forum is great: as with most small distros, you actually get to talk to the developers if there's a problem, rather than getting cought up in a bureaucratic wilderness like bugzilla. I also like their "give something back" philosophy. Every extra package in Salix will install safely in Slackware, so that Salix actually makes a contribution to its parent, instead of just exploiting it like some some we could name. Reading this, I can see I'm becoming a serious fan :o

just wondering which desktop you chose to go with?

DavidMcCann 05-22-2011 07:33 AM

I'm using Xfce. Firstly, it's the default so the other interfaces won't be available for a little while. Secondly, I like it: I don't like KDE, LXDE feels unfinished, and Fluxbox lacks features I need.

SalmonEater 05-22-2011 08:03 AM

In Salix, the LXDE does 'feel unfinished.' Not so in peppermint One, however.

antiX or its progenitor, MEPIS, may well be other candidates in your search, linuxlover2.

I installed Salix and when I restarted my computer to finish the installation, it said kernel panic: not syncing. Could you tell me what went wrong?

TobiSGD 05-23-2011 03:37 AM

Please give us at least the last 5 lines before that error message, so that we can better help you.

All it says is BIOS data check successful
[7.148184] Kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block
[7.148184] Pid:1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.3.7.6-smp #2
[7.148296] Call Trace:
[7.148349][<c19daa01>] ?printk+0x1d/0x1f

[7.148453][<c1cfac39>] mount_block_root+0x1c0/0x259

And it continues in that fashion for a few more lines

TobiSGD 05-23-2011 12:56 PM

Seems that it can't find your /-partition. I think that you should open a new thread regarding this issue. Post all relevant info into the new thread, like your partitions, which options you choose when installing.

linuxlover2 05-23-2011 12:57 PM

Ok thanks
