suse8 Results - Frame Buffer ??? WinTV ??

Well I manage to get the suse8 installed at once, and also (suse8) found all my hardware devces, but few of them still need some reconfigure to work properly.

1. Printer HP720C , which uses a different driver from most HP printers was autodetected and configured veryyy easily during the setup time.

2. Network card & Sound card configured during the installation process no need to interact..
Realtek 10/100 & Live player 1024

However I think that I am gonna enable the sound card in the kernel instead of using a module cause the Back speakers don't work.

3. Webcam - Creative Webcam Go.
Was found by the kernel and is detected during each boot process.
The webcam is powered on , BUT I cannot make the webcam software to detect it...

- ~ ~ ~ ~
Do you know which cam shall I choose from the menu of the webcam software to make my webcam work ?
- ~ ~ ~ ~

4. CD-r & DVD detected but no time to test them yet..
Hp 8100 & Pioneer DVD 10X

5. G3 Ti 200 detected but the driver must be installed.
still no hardware acceleration is enabled.

--- ------GENERAL QUESTIONS------ ----

do you know where the following configurations are located in suse ?

slack8 suse 8

init scripts ?
/etc/rc.d/ ?

I installed the kernel sources from the suse cd but cannot find them anywhere... ay idea... well I fell like getting the kernel from the web anyway.

Everytime I logout from the KDE (as root) my desktop settings are not saved ???

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
suse 8 is ok , no need to connect to internet to download any packages, all are included in the 7 CDs of the installation.

However in order to make averything work correctly is gonna take some time long of manually reconfiguration . . . .

hi. i also have suse 8, to get into the configuration, after you get into the kde desktop, look at the panel at bottom of the desktop, their is a icon with what looks like wrenches around it, click on it, then click on yast 2 control center. type in your root password, and that should get ya into the config page

I know yast/2 I I gone through all the yast menus... not enough..
must more staff have to be configured....

Is it possible to configure them manually or they are so complicated that you can only edit them using yast/2 ??

I think what you're looking for is in the init.d directory. There is a README somewhere in there that explains how they moved files around. I had to add something for my modem and used the bootlocal file. The KDE thing can be fixed by getting the update. If you do an online update, you'll see it in there.

Finally I manage to configure

hauppage WinTV - kwintv
Creative Web Cam - xawtv

BUT !

While I was testing some different setting of FRAME BUFFER in the kernel configuration I had some problems...

Sometimes while I was booting I had a black screen..I manage to fix that ..BUT no my wintv does not play

Does anyone know what DGA is and what it has to do with the winTV and Frame Buffer configuration ??

When I run the kwintv I get an error that says
DGA and Frame Buffer do not aggre at the resulution of your screen..

I just made some changes in the kernel configuration and then I started getting this problem...
any idea ??

At the moment I have not got network connection home, anyway I am not going to use KDE as my main desktop.. I am going for the WMaker instead.

Its says that you can apply the update by using YAST2.

Well I use Yast2 but I canot make it read the packages from my dir /updatessuse/8.0/ ?
strange, when its promts for the SOURCE I chose the directory option and then I set it to my /updatessuse/8.0/ dir but it says it cannot read /dev/hdc device (this is my cdrom dev).

Is this one more Yast's bug ?I 'll probably try to install them manually by rpm -U.

I had a problem with the winTV from the default Suse8 kernel.

I had an error about DGA (more info in the suse-bttv-dga thread) but I fix it by using a clean kernel from kernel.org 2.4.18 and just reconfiguring it ...

It takes time to specify all the required modules but after that everything works fine..

I moved from Suse 7.3 to 8.0 yesterday. I am having 2 problems:

1. Cannot get your SB live 5.1(emu10k1) to play the rear speakers. I am also having the same problem. I get only the front side speaker and the sub woofer to play and a lot of hiss from the center speaker. But no sound on the reart speaker. And also I could not play and midi files.

2. Mounting audio cds. Somehow whenever I try to mount a audio Cd I get a error:
"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems"
However I can mount suse install cds . In that case the device looks fine. Is this a problem with the autofs. Here is how my fstab looks:

/dev/hda9 / reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hda8 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
/dev/hda10 /home reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat noauto,user 0 0
usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda7 swap swap pri=42 0 0
nas1:/vol/vol1/home11/sw/manasb /home/manasb/carson nfs defaults

Any help is appreciated :-)

1. Sound Card - (I have SBLive Player 1024)

I had the same problem at the beginning. I always include my soundcard in the kernel..(not module). and the same to the SBLive midi.
The rear speakers now work, I am not sure about the midi , I have to test it..

2. I haven't notice that..I really never use the cdrom for audio, cause I have my HIFI, next to me

I will have a look and I'll tell you.

HINT: Basically I recompliled a whole new kernel, the default was very tricky..

you don't mount audio cd's. open the cd player and press play.

I now have the rear speakers working with the SB Live 5.1. I just had to rebuild the kernel ( the 2.4.18.Suse). However I built the emu10k1 as a module. The emu-scrit , emu-config include in Suse 8.0 are awesome. Just edit the /etc/emu101.conf and run emu-script and customize the sound output ..

Now I have Suse 8.0 running on 3 PCs. The Suse installer YAST2 is just too good !! YAST2 is the special sauce that differentiates Suse from the other distros.

Some DVD drives might need firmware update in order to be read the DVD provided in Suse8.

Check suse mailing list for more info.
