Suse Movie player won't play Dvd's (license issue)
 

Can someone help me get kaffeine (xine) to work in Suse 9.0
I try to play a Dvd and I get a message that says
"This version of Xine has only a reduced set of supported codecs. It is not able to play Dvd's.
Please read http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/09/xine_dvd.html for further details."

And the suse website says:

Movie player applications on SuSE Linux are unable to play a number of movie file formats, especially movie DVDs. Due to patented codecs and copy protection, SuSE is not allowed to deliver full-featured movie players with the distribution.

The xine lib package is especially affected. It is missing some plug-ins, so all xine-based players (like kaffeine, totem or noatun) are also unable to play these media.

Please do not write bug reports to these projects when you are unable to play files, because this is not a bug, but a legal requirement and neither the authors nor SuSE have a chance to fix this.

Unfortunately there is, to our knowledge, no legal DVD player for Linux currently sold by anyone."

I've downloaded and installed the following rpm's.

libdvdcss and libdvdcss-devel

That doesn't seem to help.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I also tried to compile mplayer with the following command:
./configure --enable-gui --enable-png

and I get the following error:

Checking for gethostbyname2 ... yes
Checking for GUI ... yes

Error: X11 support required for GUI compilation

Any help would be appreciated.
I am very happy with Suse 9.0 especially Gnome!
Suse has configured everything perfectly so far,
sound, digital camera, Mozilla has flash and Java already working,
plus I love the bitstream vera sans fonts that I've enabled in gnome and Mozilla, its a sweet setup. If I could just get the darn dvd player working it would be perfect.

I have mplayer working fine on Suse 9.0

I can't remember exactly, but it sounds like there are a few more packages that you need to install

What readme and what instructions? Are they in Kaffeine's file?

Download ALL the packages from here (except vlc package) ther're Redhat but work for SuSE then install Mplayer.Make sure you turn DMA on for your DVD player (YaST/hardware/IDE DMA mode)

Check "configure.log" if you do not understand why it failed.

I have gnome, wouldn't I have to have GTK?

You have the GTK runtime libraries, what you need is the development libraries.
They should be called gtk-devel, or something like that. I don't know exactly, as I don't run SUSE.

Depending on the speed of your connection, try downloading the dvd plugin from packman.links2linux.org - they have suse9 rpms there. If you have already installed the libdvdcss the kaffeine might work now (I haven't tested this, but if you're on 56k it's quicker than downloading a new libxine).

If you have a fast connection or patience, I recommend downloading everything here, especially the win32 codecs. This will allow you to play wmv files and the like as well.

I'm not sure whether the first solution will work, because I think the libxine that suse 9 installs is a crippled version. The second way will definitely work, but it will take longer.

edit: search for gtk from Yast2 and install the packages from your install cd/dvd if there are any missing.

Thanks for all the help! I ended up finding apt for SuSe 9.0 So after downloading and installing apt and Synaptic I simply found MPlayer and in Synaptic and dowloaded and it works flawlessly. Had to turn on DMA for my /dev/hdc of course.
