Question SuSE CD Drive Problems

Hello,

I am new to Linux. I recently installed SuSE 8.0 and I am pleased with it, except for one thing. I cannot seem to use my CD drive. Sure, SuSE gleefully installs packages from the CDs but that is the only indication I get that my CD drive is working at all.

Whenever I try to open a CD, I get this message:

"Could not mount device
The reported error was:
/dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type and none was specified"

I also cannot listen to audio CDs. The programs that are come with SuSE that are meant to do that just pretend there isn't a CD in the drive at all.

Another problem is that sometimes (I don't know what causes this) I cannot eject the CD.

All this seems so very silly to me. How can it be that I install programs from the SuSE CDs but am totally unable to do anything with any other CDs?

Thank you for any help.

When ya run in terminal window ls /dev/cdrom, what ya get.

there was a similar post a few days ago...

Suse is ok ... you just do something wrong....

1. To listen to audio CDs you shouldn;t mount the device, just open the CDaudio player and it will just play the music.

2. In order to get my CD_recorder detected I have to run
insmod ide-scsi
module cause I emulate my cd-r like a scsi cd-r. (however its ide).

3. probably you have to chect the /etc/fstab for the /dev/cdrom line to check if it exists or not..

Thanks for the help, fellows.

I feel pretty stupid to have bothered the forums with this question because right after I posted the question, it occured to me to check the suse website for the solution to my problem. Whaddyaknow, my problem and its solution were the first results from a support search for "CD drive".

Shows-to-go-ya, check the FAQ before you make an idiot of yourself.
