suse and or red hat 9.0

last December i tried red hat 9.0 out with major disappointment. so i decided to stick with 8.0. I'm thinking now 6 months later that most of the bugs are worked out. so I'm thinking about taking the plunge. I'm trying to figure out what major differences i will expect with 9.0 if anything as far as what i am familiar? i know i had some problems with my cd Rom's and the scsi emulation it was setup different than 8.0, there was none if i remember right when i did a cdrecord --scanbus but yet i could still burn cd's. i just know that red hat 8.0 is rock solid for me and it seems that there is beginning to be less and less updates for it. xfree86 has fallen behind for one thing as far a rpm updates go. it just seems that red hat 9.0 is just a major fix or service pack for 8.0 rather than a new release. i don't remember it being that way from 7.3 to 8.0. 7.3 hasn't been forgotten like 8.0 has or so it seems to me.

one more thing i have really been curious about suse i hear allot of good things about suse. what is suse's package management like. i like to use synaptic (apt-get) its great and really easy and i noticed that suse uses rpm packaging. I'm just wondering what a change over from red hat to suse would be like for a guy who has only been using linux for almost a year. what I'm thinking about is getting another computer something older say 800MHz to run my mail server and web server. i figured suse would be great for that. i noticed a nice looking lime green yellow box at the book store the other day and it made me want to buy the damed thing :) it looked good enough to eat I'm just hoping it wont be a disappointment when comparing it to red hat.

hey thanks for any advise fellow LQ members

Ok - something ain't quite right here. RH9 wasn't released until March 2003. Are you sure that's what you tried in December?

If you are happy with 8 then I would just stick with it. RedHat 8 was a pre-release to RedHat 9 and mainly included bug fixes. If none of your programs are affected then I would go with the old saying "If it ain't broke then don't fix it"

duuuh my bad march.

wouldnt life be boring if thats how we all thought there would never be any progress just the same old if it aint broke dont fix it. trying new things is sometimes good. i noticed you run redhat 9.0 was 8.0 broke or something.

i really wanted to check out the newest xfree86 but there are no rpms for redhat 8.0 and installing from source seems like a pain in the ass.

thanks for the reply,

I run both 8 and 9 on a development machine. To be honest I use RH8 more because I have it setup the way I want it an can't be bothered to do the same to 9 as I can't see any benifits. Anyway - its up to you. Personnaly I wouldn't upgrade I'd just format and start again. This is a very good reason for keeping /home on a seperate partition.

It seems the choice is yours.

I have Redhat9 installed and apart from me being a bit slow with Samba. I've not really had any problems.

There are people though that have had nothing but problems.

If your RH8 machine is a spare machine then I would say give it a go. If its your only machine then you would need to consider the fact that you "MAY" have problems.

I tried 4 different versions of Linux and Redhat 9 was the only one that worked properly for me.

I did install RH9 3 times to get it right as I set the partitions myself and did a custom install and missed out the GCC stuff. If your a KDE person then install Koffice rather than OpenOffice as it opens in half the time.

Now I have a fully working machine which now gets used more than my windows pc.

If all else fails you can always re-install RH8 again. Not fogetting that RH are going to stop updates for RH8 soon.

Good luck
