Newbies should use Ubuntu. This is a perfect alternative to SuSE. To use Debian you need at least basic knowledge in Linux or at least in APT. Debian SID is one of the most bleeding edge distros in the Linux world and my favourite choice.
I have been too busy to get my Suse 10.3 back up and running - I had to reinstall Windows 2000 and it blew away my settings for dualboot - was not able to get back into Suse and time constraints did not allow. If Suse is not the way to go I'd like to get some recommendations on an easy install that will give me a Windows like desktop with the minimum of time invested. I still need to dual boot to WinXP since I have some software that just isnt ported to Linux. The reason I am after a Windows "Like" desktop is I have users that freek when faced with a totally "New" look and feel. I also have had some networking issues that I was unable to resolve with Windows 2000 - one of my users just will not convert. Anyway - a push in the right direction would help.
I've started downloading the torrents to Debian "etch".
At a download rate of ~3.0kb/sec, I will have them in a mere 16 days.

there is no mention of mirrors.
You will get as many answers as distros. I am in a similar position as you: I am running SuSE 10.1 and I ordered SuSE 10.2 from Novell but at the same time I am looking into alternatives. I love SuSE. I do not use the graphic interface all the time but it works great. From all the one I tested 2 I like:
PClinux
Kubuntu
Kubuntu of course has the trick with the root password but that's all the rest is a well put together distro with KDE.
Both have a nice graphic installers that work better than zen. In Suse I endup using SMART as installer.
