SuSE 9 Free download

I'm toying around with various distros at the moment, and thought I'd have a look at SuSE desktop 9. There don't seem to be any links to ISO files for the install on the SuSE site. Anybody know if and how you can get it for free? If not, what's going on?

Moved: More suitable in our Distro's forum.

And the only ISO's you will find for Suse is the Live Eval version. They don't offer their full distro as an ISO, you either need to buy it or download it via FTP.

One question:
if Suse won't give ISOs of v.9.0, but allows you to d/l it via FTP, is it illegal to create by yourself ISOs and distribute them (eg. if someone has bought it and uploads them somewhere)?

Free To Distribute

Just a service to help out those who don't have the bandwidth or having trouble with the ftp download. Cost is for the cds and shipping. No harm intended.

So i guess that uploading ISOs is ok, right?

pctech101 04-13-2004 04:09 PM

The other problem you get when trying to copy and sell Suse cd's are that they contain commercial software so you are therefore breaking copyright laws.

or1onas 04-21-2004 01:04 AM

I'm not talking about selling. I'm talking about having eg. an ftp with the ISOs free 4 download...

No, this is total crap! You may copy, give away, transfer both versions (Personal and Pro) of SUSE Linux 9.0 or earlier as long as you do it "free of charge". This restriction was imposed due to the (now old) version of the SUSE YaST license. It is not yet clear wether downloading SUSE from P2P is legal, because you do "trade" the (normally) simultanous upload for a sooner download of another file!

Here is the official statement of the SUSE Linux AG published by the German ct' magazine:
http://www.heise.de/ct/03/23/196/default.shtml
Translation of the last sentence: You may copy SUSE Linux on an unlimited number of CDs/DVDs and give them away as long as you do it free of charge.

For future versions (starting probably with SUSE 9.1, no confirmation yet) they did put SUSE YaST also under GPL, which means that you can probably sell SUSE again under GPL again and therefore can probably be downloaded legally from P2P.

However you can build your own SUSE Linux bootable DVD using the FTP Version available on SUSE Mirrors. Check out the following guide:

That's why I posted when you are trying to copy and sell it like what pctech101 was trying to do.
