i have suse 8.2 professional on my one rig, and reallly like it. the thing i really like about suse prof is the sortware you can get off the dvd,s, don,t have to download it off the internet and install. just installed opera.
is there any compelling reason to get suse 9 prof?
I upgraded from Suse 8.2 to 9.0 and found it very good, all my hardware was configured fine, except I couldn't install the Nvidia driver from the command line like I did in 8.2, it complained about not having a driver for my kernel, however YAST's online update had no problem, and 3d worked fine. However I did get a problem when running some of the new games with seti running, I got very jerky graphics, which I didn't have any problems with on exactly the same setup on 8.2. This may have been fixed actually, by removing the word DESKTOP from a line in the boot loader, apparently it effects performance, but have not tried it yet as I have just reinstalled 8.2 and have got everything running as smoothly as it was before installing 9.0. One nice improvement over 8.2 is the fonts, I was able to read the writing on my online bank statements without having to get closer to the screen, it was legible from a normal sitting position. There are a few new games bundled with it which are quite good, and of course it comes wih Open Office 1.1, but that's available for download anyway. Another annoyance I got on my installation of 9.0 was that a lot of the applications in the KDE menu didn't have the correct icon next to them just a white square.
But apart from those niggles everything worked fine, even the graphics when I wasn't running seti. But as 8.2 didn't have a problem with seti and games I decided to go back to 8.2.
believe i may stay with suse 8.2, or may get a cheap version of suse 9 off ebay when i find a copy. i seen it for $64 from amazon i believe , not a bad price for suse 9 prof. see ya
there's already another topic exactly like this one (don't mean to be rude). to find it, search for "suse 9 professional". i think it's titled "any reason to get suse 9 prof. over personal ?"
it has tons of posts already, check it out. i'd say go with pro, and so does everyone else at this post.
