SuSE 9.1: Two User accounts, same permissions, one can't play music

I installed SuSE 9.1 Pro on my husband's box for work. It shares a 40 gig drive with Win98. I set up two user accounts, one for him and one for me. Both accounts have the same permissions and group affiliations. In my account, KSCD will play music cd's automatically. In my husband's account, it won't. No application can see /dev/hdc in his account. Can't play music, can't open the directory for /hdc.

Here's my /etc/fstab. I added "users" to /dev/cdrecorder, /dev/cdrom and /dev/fd0, but other than that, it's the way SuSE set it up. Could the problem be that it's looking for /dev/hdc, but fstab has it as /dev/cdrom? But then why would it work in my account?

EDIT: A few hours later, a few reboots because X decides to crash every time I log out of it, and now the cdrom doesn't work in my account, either! I'm very close to wiping Suse off my drive. I've been fighting it for over a week now just to get basic functionality. It is SO unstable.

/etc/fstab:

/dev/hda3 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/hda6 /home reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/hda5 /windows/D vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/hda4 swap swap pri=42 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs users,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy subfs users,fs=floppyfss,procuid,nodev,nosuid,sync 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom subfs users,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0

FWIW, here's part of an error message I see a lot of in /var/log/messages. It runs on and on...

I'm pretty lost in SuSE, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The problem doesn't seem to exist in Gnome. And X stopped crashing when I switched from KDM to GDM. We have sound directly from the Mobo sound cable for playing CDs. Still no Alsa sound for applications though, unless I run Alsactl every time I boot up. It isn't loading the module by default. Gawd, this is a flacky distro...
