Question suse 9.1 personal installation problem

I have downloaded the 9.1 personal image file and the system runs up to the boot screen ok. I then select install, it loads the linux kernel, detects my sony dvd-rm drive (dw-d18A) but I then get a dialog "Please make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive!"

Alt F4 and I see some errors:

Device not ready. make sure there is a disk in the drive.
MINIX-fs: blocksze too small for device.
VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev hdc
FAT: Bogus number of reserved sectors
VFS: cant' find a valid FAT filesystem on dev hdc
attempt to access beyond end of device.
hdc: rw=0 want=68, limit=4

What's it all mean ? !!!

SuSEs Yast installer detected a defect image. This can be a defect on your CD or the program that you used for burning the CD doen't handle ISO images correct. Finally I could be, that there's problem in the CD access.

- Try to burn the CD with a lower speed (12x or 8x)
- Try to use another burning program
- Try to use the failsave installation mode

Dirk many thanks for taking the time to reply.

I tried the different installation options without luck.

I burnt the program on suse 9.0 Pro using cdrecord. I believe that the download is an iso image so there's no need to use mkisofs first. I ran at 2x and used the -v option. No errors were reported during burning.

I'll try again to a different media. I'll also check the CD in other PCs. What do you mean by perhaps there's a problem in the CD access? The PC, a shuttle SN85G4, also has a card reader drive, a SATA hard drive (hence the need to move to 9.1) and no floppy drive, perhaps yast is trying to mount the wrong device? Is it possble to define where yast should look for the installation filesystem? Could it be trying to mount a DVD not a CD, or mount from the card reader?

No, your Hardware sounds very similar to mine and I installed SuSE 9.1 Personal Ed. on a brand new Dell (Intel SATA, PATA Mode, DVD+ DVD+RW) without major problems.

I haven't got the slightest idea what's going wrong on your site, especially because you tried everything what I would have done

If you receive no further information in this forum, try to post your problem in suses mailing list servers.

No you were right Dirk. There was a problem with the disk. I've burned one onto a different CD, same method but a different make, and that starts the installation ok.
