Exclamation SuSe 9.1 and kppp

Ok guys I got a dialup related question, mind you I don't use dial up but my mom does.

So I set my mom up with a computer, and have it running SuSe 9.1 personal, durring installation it reconized the modem with out a hitch, it even configured with out a hitch.

Then I waited for the new ISP (she was using AOL) to reflect her account with them, when it was working I tryed to connect to the internet, and nothing! I tryed a couple of times and still nothing.

The error message in the Kinternet log is as follows:
Code:
SuSe Meta PPPd (smppd-ifcfg) Verison 1.16 on linux
Status is: disconnected
Trying to connect to SMPPPd
Connect to SMPPPd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: Connected
Status is: Disconnected
PPPd[0] died pppdoptions error (exit code 2)
So I asked google and it told me that the modem was reciving 2 diffrent confliction options at the same time, there was also a work around, use KPPP.

So my big question if I were to have my mom type 'KPPP' in a termnal window would that work?? (mind you I can only use phone support she lives too far a way for a physical visit.) Or Is there something else that I need to do.

P.S. I only have about a week in the states, so quick replies would be much appricated

Thanks alot,

"So my big question if I were to have my mom type 'KPPP' in a termnal window would that work??"

kppp has to be set up first. Here is a kppp handbook.
http://gershwin.ens.fr/vdaniel/Doc-L...kppp.html#toc1

"So I asked google and it told me that the modem was reciving 2 diffrent confliction options at the same time"
Yes.

"there was also a work around, use KPPP."
Maybe. If you have set up the modem with 2 conflicting options you can possibly make the same mistake in setting up kppp.

When I have problems setting up a modem I switch to wvdial. wvdial can be configured by editing /etc/wvdial.conf. If you have to debug your modem setup then wvdial is the easiest to debug. Here is a wvdial HOWTO.
http://www.linux.se/doc/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO/x314.html

If you want to allow the user to use wvdial without giving a password then try this:
On my SuSE 9.1 system I issued the following commands to allow a user to dial out with
wvdial without giving any password.
ln -s ttyS1 /dev/modem
chown root:dialout /dev/ttyS1
chmod 660 /dev/ttyS1
chown root:dialout /dev/modem
chown root:dialout /etc/wvdial.conf
chmod 660 /etc/wvdial.conf
chown root:dialout /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
chmod 660 /etc/chap-secrets
chown root:dialout /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
chmod 660 /etc/pap-secrets
chown root:dialout /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial
chmod 660 /etc/ppp/peer/wvdial
chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd

Suse is just bad, mainly, because always inconsistent error messages on kppp..How can anyone help with that behavior from suse?
