Suse 9.0 Blank screen instead of login in screen

I am a NooB and installed SuSe 9.0 successfully off of an FTP Server. I was able to run the web update and updated everything that was recommended. I reboot the system and now the screen that should be the login screen comes up blank. I tried Ctrl F1 and so forth trying to pull up a command prompt but was unable to have any input into the system. The Numlock key works so I know the keyboard works.

Any and all help will be thankful.

Damon

Try ctrl-alt-F1. When you're in the clutches of the X server you need the alt otherwise nothing happens. If that fails then try a ctrl-alt-backspace which should kill the X server. It sounds like your X config is incorrect or incomplete so you'll have to fix that. Try looking at /var/log/XFree86.log for some clues as to what might have gone wrong.

after killing the X u could run sax or yast, too, i guess.

I was able to fix the problem by rebooting into failsafe and then typeing in a command that reset the drivers for my graphics card. I do not remember the command but i would ecourage anyone who does know it to leave it in this thread so that anyone else who comes by this problem can easly fix it.

Hi, I have a similar problem (with blank screen instead of login). I use opensuse 10.2 and have 2 nvidia 7800gtx cards in sli. It seems that on bootup, the display uses the 1st card and thereafter, it uses the second one. Is there any way to configure it to use one card consistently?
