SuSE 8.2 for i386???

Hello,

I've been using SuSE since version 7.3 as my primary desktop distro and am very pleased and comfortable with it. As you know, ever since 8.1, the SuSE disto has been compiled for i586. I was wondering if there's any way to obtain (or compile my own) 8.2 distro for i386 so that I can intsall it on my nifty new VIA EPIA based Hush PC .

Thanks for your help.

The ad says that the Hush Pc is optionally shipped with Windows XP. Doesn't XP require i586?

I'm not sure about XP, but running the install from the Suse 8.2 CD would fail with some message complaining about unsupported CPU type.

I was able to install Redhat 9 on it successfully, but would much rather switch it to suse.

I think that this is the problem:

SuSE ships with several pre compiled kernels. The install program looks at the CPU id and decides that none of its kernels will work. In fact the SuSE kernel compiled for Intel will probably work OK. Is it possible in the SuSE 8.2 install to hand select which kernel to use? I know that I could do that on some of the older SuSE versions.

It's a 1 GHz 686-class processor but it's made by VIA, and not AMD or Intel or anyone, it seems to me. Ain't no 1 GHz 386 processors. It's probably just that it's a completely non-standard cpu. I'm sure Windows and VIA made sure it would work with XP, but that's probably it. - Well, and re-reading more carefully, Red Hat. Must be some funky kernel settings or drivers in Red Hat that you need to compile for Suse or something.
