SuSe 8.1 Windowmanager Freeze

I've just install SuSe 8.1 on a 2 disk system. One disk with Windows 98 the other with 3 Linux partitians. SuSe 8.1, swap and a user data area. SuSe was designated this as /data1.

I've created a new user account with YaST2 with a home directory on /data1/home/"user name". The new user area is created OK.

When I use the KDE login screen with the new account I get a freeze up when the KDE login gets to the windowmanager stage. I have tried other window managers with the same result.

The screen will not respond to any keyboard commands or mouse clicks.

I can login under a new session and re-boot to get rid of the locked screen.

I can access the /data1 partitian OK. If I create a new account on the SuSe partitian I have no problems.

Any one got any ideas how I can have my home directories on my user partitian.

Thanks.
