What I know of Linux is that it is an OS. I have installed this distro. Why Pro? To see what's there. One day, maybe? Anyway, I have not been able to config either dial-up or ADSL. ADSL is what I need to use. I have read instructions from the book, website, and from tech's. I still don't "get it". Wish I'd never seen Windoze anything. But, I did.
In very simple terms, would someone explain to this old guy how to get this done. I know it is not hard, IF you know where you are going with it. I am not anywhere close to that. TIA
And it seems, from the link, that there is not a "fix" for the whole issue. Oh yeah, I have no idea as to how to "compile" anything. If it weren't for the GUI, I'd be in deep Penguin dodo.
Any other ideas?
Like probably installing the Mandrake 8.1 I have? Unfortunately I paid $70 bucks and can't use it to it's fullest. Bummer.
BTW, rshaw, I was raised in Des Moines and left there in '55. Now reside in Houston, TX.
well, there are two options. load the 2.2.x kernel or download the patches from the link.
to switch kernels, open yast2 and choose system > select kernel. pick the 2.2.xx kernel, click next and that will install and configure it.
to configure regular dialup, open yast2 click network/basic, modem configuration, click add and fill in all the info, username and password, phone number of the isp, etc. that will configure wvdial. then on the desktop near the clock is a plug icon, click that and it will dial and connect. once connected run yast2 and choose online update. that should retrieve and install all the patches since 7.1 was released.
Now THAT is information I can use. Why? Because I understand the process that is explained to me. I understand how to get to where I need to be to solve the problem.
Well, hopefully!
Thanks for that, rshaw. I got what I needed here. Couldn't do that at SuSE for some reason. (?)
