We already have a lot of threads like this... I guess it's all a matter of choice, because if it would be a best distro, everyone would use it.
I like Fedora and it's easy to install if you wanna try it.

what about easy to use? any suggestion as to what distribution??

pixellany 11-13-2006 11:02 PM

All are very close in terms of ease of use.
My vote goes to any number of Debian-based distros--eg Ubuntu, Mepis, Kubuntu (Ubuntu+KDE)
Or--anything that uses the Synaptic package manager--eg PCLinuxOS ( and all of the above)

Well I'm currently using gentoo..I don't know if it is the best to use, but is the best for me to try to learn linux. It takes like 2 days to install. I think when I did the gcc update it took almost 4 days to complete because I had to recompile everything twice. So if you want to learn it faster I would say gentoo, If you want a linux version similiar to windows, I would go with mandrake, or I think it is called mandrivia now. I used it before gentoo, everything seemed as simple as in windows.

You don't actually need to compile everything... In Linux you have rpms and you can install Fedora 6 in like 1 hour...

I think Ubuntu sucks, Mandriva sucks, and Fedora sucks. I think Mac OSX is the best way to go if you're looking to try a new OS.

zahadumy 11-14-2006 12:58 AM

Then why are you still using Ubuntu and posting on a site called linuxquestions.org? :)

Xandros is the easiest to install and use. I prefer Suse as my main distro.

Very intelligent reply.

Please enlighten us why Ubuntu, Mandriva and Fedora suck.

PS According to your profile, you use Ubuntu at the moment. Is it the one that sucks the least or ...

Why don't you use only OSX?

Yes I use OSX also, but the good thing about Linux, it will run on just about anything! :D

I'd reccomend A couple

Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Uses KDE desktop, one CD install works both as a live and Install CD. Be wary it is a bit bloated.

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

This is what PCLinuxOS is based on it is a BIG distrobution with all you will ever need

PCLinuxOS .92
http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/dist...glish/preview/
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distr...glish/preview/

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.

BeatrIX
http://www.watsky.net/download.html

This Distro is small fast and effective, the ultimite Workers CD

Blag
http://www.blagblagblag.org/download/

is A one CD install of Fedora Core

Mephis
http://www.mepis.org/

if your still unsure
