"startkde" in Gentoo gives errors

Hi all! I'm just trying to figure out how to configure Gentoo right now and so far it looks like the install worked, however I'm still having a problem when trying to "startkde". I get the following errors:

Code:
sienarot $ startkde
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
Now, if I "startx", it loads up to three terminals, and if I type "startkde" in any of these terminals it does work however. Can anyone make any sense of this?

Try creating a file called .xinitrc in your home directory with the following contents:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec startkde
and then type startx

Oh, one more (related) question. What do I have to do so that it logs directly into KDM? Right now after start up, it just sits at the command prompt for user login. I'd like it to go directly to KDM for the login prompt.

as I said before edit the file /etc/rc.conf and look for the line
Code:
# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | elogin | entrance ]
#DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"
then uncomment that line
