Starting a new distro
HI!
I'm interested in creating new Linux distro that has minimal packages for education purposes and localized to my language. Is there anyone who has an experience with it? Where to begin learning? I know about LFS. But I think it doesn't solve all my problems. Is there any book or internet resources about this process? Or just advice me the first steps please.. thanks earlier for replys! |
Starting your own distro is not easy and is very time consuming. You could build off an existing distribution, like Debian. You would either need to build all the packages from source, or use existing Debian packages, which may not be avaliable in your language. There are a lot of existing articles avaliable too:
http://www.tectonic.co.za/view.php?id=297 - explains about modifying a morphix live cd. http://www.diy-linux.org/ - is slightly more complicated than LFS, but is much more bare bones. |
From your OP, it seem that you aren't looking to use LFS. So I have moved this to Linux-Distributions.

just in case, here is a list of education oriented linux distributions. If you find one that is to your liking maybe you can snag some ideas for your version (or just use one that has already been put together).

Thanks to everyone for replys, links.

I am not aware of any guides, but a quick Google search pops up this page, which may be of interest:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Modify/CD. This page allows you to modify the installer cd. There is another page too, which contains information on a custom kernel, or something along those lines: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Modify/CustomKernel I think that these pages may tell you how to change the packages that are installed when you install debian. If you compiled the packages as debs, and then placed them in the cd, the cd could be configured to install these packages at install time, therefore allowing you to have packages in your language automatically installed (someone correct me if I am wrong, as I may be out of my depth here). You could also have all the required packages installed at once, to make installation super simple. |
Another link I have found is rPath:
