Sound problems with RH8

I have just installed RH8 and Madrake 9.0 on to the same drive on separate partitions. Both installs seemed to go flawlessly. Mandrake was actually the nicest and smoothest install I have ever encountered with a linux distro. Although RH8 wasn't far behind.

I did these install because of problems I had when upgrading my RH7.2 to RH8. I have never been able to get sound working with RH and thought that upgrading to RH8 would solve my problems. Wrong. Same problem. Thats when I decided to do fresh installs.

RH8 install process found my on board sound card (VIA VT8233) and appeared to continue on fine. But when it came time to reboot and it went through the boot process and started KDE it came up with an error /dev/dsp No such device. Why? I have read somewhere that I have to turn off PnP in the BIOS which was already off. Another page somewhere said to install OSS drivers. Why? Can't RH do it right? Another page said to use ALSA drivers. Why? See above question. It is not as if this sound card is rare.

No the big question. How come Mandrake found it, installed drivers and works perfectly??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the link. For some reason, and probably because of something I have done wrong, but still no luck.

I still don't understand how mandrake can work first go and redhat, supposed to be the biggest and the best, can't get it to work without problems.

Also, if when installing the ALSA drivers you need the ALSA libs as well why don't they throw them all in one package? Bit of a rhetorical question.
