SMP problem with Pentium III and RedHat 9!?

I am running a Pentium dual III processor.... but the kernel 2.4.20-13.9smp locks up durring boot. ( right when it shows cpu1: .......
cpu2...... then STOP.

I have to use: 2.4.20-13.9 and put up with only using one processor... I think.

I checked out my /proc/cpuinfo and it says I am running

---------

processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : Pentium III (Coppermine)
stepping : 10
cpu MHz : 1004.523
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 2
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov
pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse
bogomips : 2005.40
------

But notice only 1 cpu showing, but running at 1000Mhz, when I have two 500Mhz chips.

Also, I am assuming that I am only using one chip becuase the smp kernel will not boot.... how can you really tell if your running one or two?

Thanks, I thank you in advace for information and suggestion/addvice.

thanks again,
-package
