1.) are ipchains and iptables supported in the 2.2.19 kernel (the default kernel for slack8 right) ?

2.) where are the PAM stuff on slack8?

3.) is there a usertty file somewhere?

generic questions:
1.) how do i uninstall stuff on linux?

2.) i still can't get my soundcard to work (it's an ISA PnP SB16 AWE). lsmod shows this:

Yep, ipchains and iptables are supported. The 2.2.x kernel uses ipchains and the 2.4.x kernel uses the newer iptables.

Can't say I remember where I found PAM or usertty but if you want to easily uninstall a package type: pkgtool
This will bring up an ncurses based menu that you can easily view, add & remove any set of libs, programs etc. on the system.

As for the soundcard. Do you have ISA PnP enabled in the kernel? And is PnP OS Installed turned off in the BIOS? Try using the card as root first and if you do get sound but not as a user it's just permissions that need to be set.

I have a motherboard with onboard sound, and a SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum card. Complicated system I think. I was having problems until I grabbed OpenSound. Ran the install and everything was detected and beautiful. Only problem being it's shareware of sorts. Check out www.opensound.com.

Since most of your questions have already been answered, i'll just try to help with the sound problem.As the first guy said, make sure you have PNP os disabled in the bios.Now for the sound,slackware should have support for your card,use pico, or your favorite text editor to open /etc/rc.d/rc.modules,and find the sound card section,uncomment the line for your card, I think the regular /sbin/modprobe sb line will work fine.
If you cant get that to work, try www.opensound.com, and download oss.Its shareware,and limits you to three hours of sound unless you pay the 20+ bucks, but its easy, a simple download, untar, and ./oss-install should pick your card right up.But I would recommend trying to edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules first, so you can have full sound, with out paying ;)
