Severn vs Shrike
 

Is it worth downloading Severn (latest Red Hat Beta) as opposed to keeping Shrike (latest stable Red Hat)? Is there a particular difference in stability and functionality or should I wait for further releases?

Well, RH9 should be more stable, with the Beta should have some updated packages.

Id just wait until RH10 comes out in September.

Yeah I was thinking that. As it is only a short wait (until the rescheduling is announced :p) I'll hold off 'til then.

I actually installed it and it broke my red hat install pretty nicely...

Since it's a beta I wasn't really expecting much. It doesn't have any options as to what kind of an upgrade you want (i.e. it doesn't allow you to customize the packages being installed). It just automatically updates you if it sees a red hat installation... It basically removed all of the kernels I had installed and installed itself without installing the right compiler.

I then could only boot into text only, and since it's a newer kernel, the nvidia website didn't have drivers for it. Since it didn't install the right compiler it couldn't compile one properly for me. I could force it to compile and then get into X, but any graphics intensive appplications would break. I had to recompile a new kernel and install it myself.

The other upgrades I did didn't remove my existing kernel when upgrading, they left them there for me to boot to as an alternative. This one just erased everything in /boot and put it's own stuff in there.

Anyways, it's beta, so unless you're really desperate to see it, I would just wait a bit longer, you're not missing much.

also, red hat 10 will be more acceptable for the nforce 2 boards. had troulbe installed suse 8.2 on nforce2 asus a7n8x deluxe. could only boot in safe setting mode, and had to install d-link ethernet card, suse 8.2 did not recognize my onboard lans. the kernal on red hat 9 and suse 8.2 are similar
