setting root passwd doesnt work

hey guys im running gentoo-2.6.11-r11 and when i try and set the root password it doesnt work

#passwd
Enter New Password:


I press the keys on my keyboard and nothing comes up! I can press CNTRL+C to get out of it, but why isnt it letting me type in a password???

It's probably working just fine, but not echoing the keys to the screen.. this is standard behavior for setting passwords on all distros that I can remember. Just type in the password, hit enter, and type it again for confirmation. That's it.

It isn't supposed to show the password as you type it. It sounds like it's working fine to me.
