server distrobution - easyily updatable?

I want to turn one of the computers in my house into a file server/ experiment box.

I want a distrobution with a deb like package system that can be installed in a minimalist manner (no need for X, or even half the daemons that most distrobutions include) But debian its self is too out of date for me, i need a 2.6 kernel and id really like to avoid devfs (a la debian)

does anybody know what I am looking for?

I think limiting yourself to a distro that uses debs is wrong. There are many distros out there that are not deb based but can be easily updated just like debian based distros.
