Screen resolution restrictions in centos with nvidia

I'm running centos 5.2 on two HP laptops (8530w and 8740w) with nvidia, and trying to get TwinView to work with an HP LCD monitor.

On the 8530, I can use nvidia-settings to set CRT-0 to 1280x1024 and things look great. But on the 8740, the max resolution I can select is 800x600. What controls the selectable resolutions in nvidia-settings?

Both machines have identical xorg.conf files and are running the same nvidia driver.

Thanks

I had this problem when I upgraded from Debian Squeeze to Wheezy. I would recommend specifically designating what type of monitor you have. My issue came from nvidia-settings have my flat panels listed as generic crts.
