I am currently on a Kubuntu, but am considering trying Sabayon... I was quite surprised to see that there is barely any discussion on this distro here on this forum... I have got the impression that Sabayon is becoming quite popular and famous now...

If it is, then there may rise discussion about it..if not, don't worry; you can still ask and probably get an answer (many Linux-related questions can be answered by people not using the exact distribution you are).

EDIT: their site looks pretty ugly and uneasy, not anything I'd like to read, not to mention a case I'd need to actually find something useful there. I hope it's just an alpha version and they'll do a complete rebuild for it. Anyway, Sabayon seems to be again one spin-off..well, it could work, or then not. If you feel it's something you could like a lot, go ahead. I wonder why it's based off Gentoo if "everything should work right out of the box", but..oh well. It's just that not everything works right out of the box Windows has tried to do that for over two decades, and still it's not working.

Famous???

Famous might have been the wrong word...

What I was thinking of when saying famous, was its reputation for being slick. It is the official distro to Beryl (which counts for alot), and has various youtube-clips (although not the most knowledgeable source) recommending it...

#5 on distrowatch is impressive, although that doesnt neccesarily reflect the quality of the distro. But considering that there are about 25 distros on this forum with a sub-forum of their own, one would expect Sabayon to have one as well. The fact that it doesnt suggests (to me anyways) that it hasnt got enough users to help out if I need help (which I invariably will need).

The criteria for having a forum for a distro here is very simple: the distro owner/devs have to agree to actively help out on their sub-forum here. If you would like to have a forum here, politely suggest it to the distro devs. However, since they have their own dedicated forums I doubt they would agree.

That said, Sabayon is Gentoo with tweaks and we have a number of users of both distros here, so ask your questions in the appropriate forum and you'll likely get an answer. Most questions here tend not to be distro specific.

I am a total Sabayon convert but I think it falls into the 'love it or loath it' category. It is certainly popular and seems to have come from nowhere in just a few months.
With regards to why there is so little discussion about it here, that may be because it is just so new and the best place to go for help is the dedicated forums.
It may also be due to the fact that it comes with over 4GB (yes Giga!) of packages on the DVD. So once you have it installed there is not much more to add.

IMHO, the major problem with Sabayon is that it's not customizable enough. Install it and you'll get over 8GB of software. Sure, you can slim it down by removing packages afterwards but that does seem a bit counter-intuitive, to say the least. Then again, as long you don't mind having all the bloatware, it's quite nice for beginners who don't want to be bothered with picking their own packages and spending hours waiting while those are compiling. There must be a reason that it's attracting more and more users while Gentoo keeps slipping downhill with every new release.

I used to be a big fan of Zenwalk which is very minimalist and the total opposite of Sabayon. However, once i tried Sabayon I realised that I actually like to have everything working 'out of the box'. I want to be able to open every kind of file without having to download something. So what if it comes with 8GB of software, I have 520GB hard disk space! Maybe I will not use 60% of the packages included but they are there if I want them.
