Running Ubuntu 7.04, Wireless connection problems

my stepfather gave me the code for his WiFi network, but then i couldn't connect to any other network, ever, even on my windows XP partition. so when i upgraded from Ubuntu 6.06 to 7.04, the password was lost but i could connect to other networks, but my (biological) fathers network had issues.
i know the password, but i have to specify what kind of WEP security it has, it has WPA and that doesnt appear so i dont have wifi once again, any answers would be appreciated.

If you, on Ubuntu, click on the network manager on the panel (on the 7.04 version) and don't just select some visible wireless network, but choose the "connect to other wireless networks" option and then give the ESSID of the network you want to connect to (wow, a lot of words..), you should get a list of WEP, WPA etc..if you just click one of those in the list of "found" wireless networks, it might not give you too many security options for some reason (my experience is that it "remembers" the last used setting).
