rpm in debian

i am sorry if this has been asked before
i know that the rpm database is situated at /var/lib/rpm
and the dpkg at /var/lib/dpkg
now i was trying to install some programs in debian
through rpm
i tried rpm --initdb
it does not work
i tried to read about db3 but there was no manual page
so i just tried
rpm -ivh packagename.rpm
the simple message no database found
any workarounds

Try alien to convert the rpm to a deb.AFAIK it is not a good idea to install a rpm as rpm on a debian box.

ok i tried that
alien -d packagename.rpm
but i know that the filesystem Hierarchy of those with debian and that of other os- mandrake, redhat are different
is this handled by alien?

Well thats the point. But mainly it should be done this way that the apt database can keep track of it and get rid of it if it doesn't work or screws something up.

of course the programs that i tried to install got installed
but in the case of a package
i had to manually copy one or two files
(its the filesystem Hierarchy again)
so i asked whether it supports the debian filesystem Hierarchy
Quote:
Debian 3.0
This is the first release of Debian that is compatible with version 2.2 of the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS).
as far as my knowledge mandrake and redhat adhere to the same standard too
then why is the filesystem different than that of mandrake and redhat
or does it mean that they are basically same (with one or two differences)
finally
thanks a lot guys
