I want to install an distro to my mother, her PC is an Athlon XP 1800+ , 512 RAM (32MB shared with a VIA onboard graphics card), 20GB ATA.
She only uses the computer for web (surf/chat/e-mail/youtube), 2D light games and office applications. She also prefer Gnome than KDE/XFCE desktop managers.
I'd like to install a rpm-based distro lighter than Fedora.
With those specs on your mother's computer you should be able to run any of the distros. The only problem you may have with the later model distros is they dropped drivers for your on board graphics or monitor. I had and older set I tried to install the latest PCLOS on and the video was all scrambled so rather than fight it I reinstalled an older Mepis lite and everything worked out all right.
I am not sure how well the repository is maintained but you can setup your codecs and use vidio lan with it. Other than the games on that set I would not worry about upgrades or updates. Just find her decent virus protection if you feel that necessary.
