My RH8 system occasionally hangs on executing [root@xxx /]# shutdown -r now from the bash shell. The screen goes *blank* and the SCROLL & CAPS-lock LEDs remain blinking until I hit the reboot button. Reboot indicates an unclean shutdown. Everytime this happens, I hit Y during boot-up to run the FileSystem integrity check.
The system offers no further clues as to why this happens.
- The /var/log/messages show no error leading to the above behaviour.
- No clues from Google for the following search strings - "shutdown -r now + errors", "shutdown -r now + problems" and "shutdown -r now + redhat + errors"
- man 2 shutdown lists some errors, can't indentify with them as my system offers no visual clues at all.
Is there any particular directory/ file/ search string/ website - that I need to be looking at?

I have to execute the above command due to another weird behaviour of RH8 w/ KDE3.0.3-8 dekstop on my PC.
The following *setting change* does not work,
Start Menu ->Control Center ->Personalisation ->Session Manager ->Default Action after Logout = Restart Computer.
The current setting is Default Action after Logout = Login as Different User
i.e.
Start Menu-> Logout = Login as Different User.

I would be grateful for any assistance / guidance that would help address this problem.
