redhat slow compared to mdk 9
 

I have mandrake 9 installed on my system for a while, but i soon got it off after i had lots of trouble with it. so i installed redhat 8.0.

redhat 8 is nice in just aboutu everything, except it is slow for my system. i switched back to mandrake 9 because redhat was just slow and i got headaches waiting for it to boot. after having installed mdk 9 again, i noticed it way way way way (3times faster) than redhat. it booted instantly, and everything opened up faster.

i mean EVERYTHING about redhat is slow, waiting for the login screen, opening up the HOME icon on the KDE desktop takes a few seconds when in mdk 9 is opens up instantly. why is this ? why is mdk9 faster than redhat 8 ?? how do i fix it ?

i would like to fix the problem, i dont care for mandrake 9. ive had my share of troubles with it.

i've tried re-building my kernel, shutting down services, but they dont seem to help.

might i also add, its the ENTIRE SYSTEM that is slow. from bootup to login screen, its slow. Waiting for GDM to load takes longer than needed, so its not KDE or my windowmanager, its the system. IceWM is even slower on redhat than mdk9 !!!

Recompiling the kernel and limiting your services is all you can do. I'm an RH user myself and I'll admit, for some reason RH 8 just does things slower no matter what you do. I posted earlier about the slowness of Webmin on RH 8. It's unbearable!!! I have yet to find the cause.

well, i disabled services before, and also recomiled a kernel, and it didnt help at all. i have 512mb of ram and 200 mb swap space, is this enough ?

Probably good enough. I have redhat 8 on a 900mhz duron with 512 mb of ram and a 1 gig swap and it is still slow. I go to open office and it take about 20 seconds before it even loads. Once it loads it seems to run fine though. Maybe it is just redhat 8 though, I haven't tried anything like 7.3.

That's more than enough. Mine is a P2 233 with 256MB. It's slow, especially in Webmin for me, but it's still usable.

As far as OpenOffice being slow, that's just part of the game. No matter what you do, it will start slow. Atleast they don't do what MS does with Office and "pre-load" the application into memory even if you didn't even plan on using it.

im talking about the whole thing is slow, not just certain programs. like GDM, the login thing, in mdk 9, it takes like 2 seconds for the login window to pop up, in redhat, its more like 10 seconds.

system boot in mandrake 9: 35 seconds
system boot in redhat 8 : 1 1/2 minutes

i have the same settings booting in redhat 8 that i do in mandrake 9. whats the problem ?

That's strange- on my machine, I feel that RedHat 8.0 is quite a bit faster than MDK 9.0.

Gnome is faster, booting is faster, everything seems to run much more smoothly. It makes a difference of eight seconds in boot time - I timed it. This is without disabling services or recompiling. Once I have done those two, It is 14 seconds faster.

My machine is a 2.0 Ghz P4 with 512 Mb or RAM.

well mines a 1.1 ghz with 512 mb ram, but theres no excuse for redhat being slow. HOW CAN I FIX THIS PROBLEM ??? if i cant find an answer, im switching to debian, or at least ill try to. Any debian users out there: words of encouragement for debian would be nice.

Oh BTW how do you make files in Windows available in Redhat 9 ??

RedHat 9.0 is so slow, just been installed in my computer for 2 days, and back to slack.

yeah, im back to mandrake 9.0, soon mandrake 9.1. I've herd redhat 9 has very very little updates since, not even kde 3.1, even though RH had the time to upgrade kde. thats pretty sad, that RH is so behind in "verion numbers" that they feel like they need to sacrifice system tools (kde, mozilla, etc..) just to keep up in version numbers !!!!!

Well i was thinking whether adding more memory will help. Hopefully run everything from memory will help. BTW, CPU usage is low in relation to memory usage. Bad design?

In my experience, most slowness issues are due to two things, memory (including too many programs running), and name resolution. Be sure to add the host's name and IP address to the "hosts" file.

Radhat ¨autorun¨ feature will slow things down
 

It runs in the background and checks the removable drives to see if anything has been loaded in them. It slows things down a LOT. I never figured out how to disable it, but couldn´t keep Redhat for that reason. I was using v.7.3.
