redhat 9 install problem

hello,
i tried to install rh9(purchased version) on my pc.
after getting all the way to the start of installing packages from first cd, the install just halted. the only
symptom i can describe is that my screen went dark, the pc beeped at me , cdrom spun down, then spun back up,
screen came back. this happened about 4 times before
doing it again and dying on install. i then tested the pc
by trying to install libranet 2.0 from a burned iso. this installed, but x failed to start, so i have a running command line libranet. this pc also has a winxp and thats running fine. next, i ran the rh 9 cd 1 in another pc,
and the install went without a hitch.
so i dont think the rh cds are bad, and since libranet did install, although x failed, i dont think its the cd rom or
hard drive. i had rh 8.0 working just fine on this pc. so has any one
have any ideas as to why rh 9 would fail to install?
given that x failed with libranet, could it be my nvidia
ge4 mmx 440? rh8.0 worked though. any suggestions or
help would be appreciated. i already know the one about if it aint broke, dont fix it- i should have left the rh 8.0 alone.

Your NVIDIA should work, cause it has compatibility.

Does anyone smoke around the computer? If so, have you tried cleaning your CDROM's lens? Perhaps it just can't read the CD properly.

It's probably a good idea to get a cleaner disk and give the lens a good cleaning anyhow. It usually helps.

If you have the 3 iso files on your windows or an ext2 file system, you can install using the install floppy.

That way, the computer doesn't depend upon the CDROM. I had a flakey CDROM and this was the way I installed Redhat on that box.

hi,
i sort of found a resolution. i installed gentoo on a different machine with a 3dfx grafix card. kind of the weenie way out,
but i so far dont use linux to play games. i had successfully
installed redhat 9.0(the same cd set) on this pc, successfully
installed libranet on the other machine, so the problem i dont think is my cd rom or the redhat cds. i switched to gentoo
for the fun of learning gentoo, and because i became very annoyed at redhat kicking me from their update network. i find that gentoo does what i want, has very good documentation,
and i can also use my redhat books for most linux issues in gentoo, except for the config files specific to gentoo. good luck on resolving your situation. although i got thru a gentoo install
succesfully, i dont really understand linux that well- i will go for libranet 2.8 (or later) when i want to run linux on my latest
nvidia ti 4200, cause libranet seems to have a great solution for nvidia, 3d, install.
