I just upgraded my system to RH9(Shrike). Everything went smoothly, except that I have no sound.

The kernal was built with my sound card supported (An older SoundBlaster). I reinstalled XMMS with the MP3 plugin, and still nothing. XMMS either acts like its on crack and goes about 8x (and Im not using the Disk Writer sound plugin), or it doesn't work at all (when I switch to OSS plugin or other).

The CD player doesn't work either. It acts like it is playing, but nothing :/

I had the same problem originally... You need to plug your cdrom sound cable (analog) into your mobo. I just installed mine not too long ago and it works great. As far as XMMS, there are a couple of sound drivers in there.... I'm using eSound driver, it works fine.

I've used the eSound 1.2.7, OSS 1.2.7, and even the DriveWrite, and none of them work.
The CDROM drive works fine, its just that no sound is coming through the speakers.

Ok, Your CDROM works fine, but you need to ensure that the sound cable is plugged into your motherboard (Open your box and look behind the CDROM - there should be a small grey wire coming out of the back of it )... I had the same exact problem.

XMMS problem = I can't help with it . Sorry and good luck

check out the alsa drivers. This should take of nearly any sound problem you encounter. It worked for me!

CDROM sound cord, definitely plugged into the sound card.

Its the drivers for the kernal, I have a Esoniq (Spelling) ES1371.

I configured the ALSA drivers for my card (according to their page), but when I went to modprobe them, it said they couldn't be found.

I then insmod'd es1371, which apparently was found, and now on startup it says something about already having an /usb/audio, and audio fails.

So, Im back to square one :/

Before you modprobe any drivers, you need to remove any sound drivers currently loaded and in use. To do that, use the rmmod command

ie rmmod snd

and remove all modules associated with your sound card.

Then try to modprobe.

Make sure you have the following line in your /etc/modules.conf
alias sound-slot-0 `sound driver`
Where `sound driver`is set to your sound card`s driver...

This will automatically load your sound driver at boot time.

I had this problem also with RH 8.0, but I noticed that sndconfig was not checked.
When I installed it and run the setup the problem was solved

Hi TechX,
can you give us the output of lsmod, please ?
I have the same problem, but it may come from a usb audio device (my webcam has a microphone...) conflict with the usual sound modules.
