Exclamation RedHat 8 Question

I was wondering if anyone knows about problems with RedHat 8 and nvidia and/or ASUS motherboards? I have tried the RH website errata page, but that only has security listings. I can't use the graphical installation... i have done the install in text mode and when i reboot and startx It doesn't work... I then proceeded to rpmbuild --rebuild and install the Nvidia kernel and GLX drivers, everything was ok until I went to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, which wasn't there... at that point i just gave up and re-installed mandrake.
If anyone has info that could help or knows where i might find it I would really appreciate it... here's my system setup

ASUS A7N266-E Mobo
1.0 GHZ AMD Duron
512mb PC2100 DDR
Geforce2 Integrated GPU
Lite-On DVD
60gb Samsung Spinpoint (hda)
40gb Western Digital (hdb)
cable modem
19in HP M90 monitor

Is setup detecting the correct video driver and monitor?

I'm running RH8 with almost the same setup. RH autodetected my GF2 and installed a driver for it, I havent tried installing the detonators yet... maybe i'll do that tonight.

It says that I have a GeForce 2 MX. I know this is not the case, but I don't think there is any way to change it, at least not that I can find.

The onboard video on the nforce 1 boards is the equivalent of a GF 2 MX video card. Redhat does not use XF86Config-4, it uses XF86Config instead.

DevilFace,

I just finished installing RH 8.0 on a A7N266-VM with onboard video/sound/lan (GF2MX) and noticed that in RH 8.0 the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file has been replaced by the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Update this file per NVIDIA's directions and it should work fine.

Note: I used the tarballs not the RPM's, they were quite painless.

rebuild rpm's

Hi,

I see in your post that you have been able to compile a new rpm from the source for the nvidia drivers. For some unknown reason, that doesn't work for me. I installed RH8.0 in a pure basic version (i.e. kept all as suggested by default). Is it possible for you (or someone else here with the basic RH8) to put the RH8.0 NVIDIA drivers somewhere on a web/ftp site, so that I can overcome this problem by downloading an rpm for rh8?

If you did the basic install, chances are all you need to do is install the kernel source.

The Linux kernel source. By default, RH does not install it. Once it is installed, you can download the nvidia kernel source rpm and the GLX source rpm AND the readme.txt from nvidia. Follow the instructions EXACTLY for installing from source rpm and you shouldn't have any problems at all.

OK, now I know where it goes wrong, thank you. Do I have to put the kernel source in a specific directory?

No, RH will put it in the correct place.

I tried it the entire weekend without success. Still the same problem: I can rebuild the NVIDIA_GLX.rpm, but not the NVIDIA_kernel.rpm So if it is possible for anyone who succeeded in this to upload the file somewhere on the web or ftp, I would be very thankful!

Otherwise, I can post the output of the attempt to build the NVIDIA_kernel.rpm here. Maybe someone can see what goed wrong.

Are you starting out with the source rpm or the tarball? Try the one you haven't used. Again, be sure and get the readme and follow the installation instructions exactly.

If I had a place to upload the rpm, I would. If you can find someplace that will let me, let me know. The only ones I will have will be for the latest RH 8 kernel - they have had 3 now.

sending it as an email attachment would not be a problem for me. Otherwise, uploading to an anonftp server would be an option.

When I get home this evening I'll see how large the file is and get back to you.
