The alsa isn't working. I'd hate to have to ditch redhat and go back to mandrake 9. I really like redhat 8 Actually I don't think I'll ever go back to mandrake 9 heh..
Hi,
As I recall i had sound problems in RH8..I had to install sndconfig and another file, awefx, I think..Then I had to go and turn on the sound so that it would start on boot ..This was for an awe32 card so yours will be different..
Keep trying, you'll get it..Everything on my system seems to work perfectly in RH8..What a pleasant surprise..
Good Luck,
JP
Thanx for the reply. I have installed Alsa in the meantime and luckily it works!
I've even found a dvd player (ogle) which can play my dvd's smoothly (with alsa) on my very slow system (PII 400) again.
-Strange thing, with RH7.3 mplayer (which now crawls) worked best, and now ogle (not so good under 7.3) works best.-
I had the same problem with RedHat and Mandrake. I think you could look up the answer under my user name. The only problem was that the sound was muted by default. I just used a program, I think it was Volume Control, moved the sound sliders a little and I had sound. Very strange, but you might want to try it. Hope it works.
I tried that at first, but the gnome volume controls kept crashing on me, after which I had to rerun sndconfig every time until that didn't work anymore, so I gave it up.
just pop-in the redhat cd and then open the package installation thing and from the "sound and audio" category, install soundconfig (sndconfig). Once you have that installed, just open up console and type
sndconfig
and just follow the on-screen info, you'll have the sound working within a minute
