Question Redhat 7.3 & 8 <=> How different are they?

Hi all,

maybe someone has read my post regarding the maya4.5
problem and finally I've got a response from a good friend
and he told me that he thinks maya4.5 will run smoothly like silk on Redhat 7.3.

I just wanted to ask if someone can tell me the rough
differences between 7.3 and 8.
Now that I finally managed to get my RH8 to run nice I'm
a bit sceptical about changing again

I would be glad if someone could help me here

Like most Linux distributions, the differences in versions is nothing more than that... Versions. Generally there's not all that much in the way of major changes in RedHat versions, just newer kernels, newer versions of packages, etc... I think 7.3 had Kernel 2.4.9 stock where 8.0 has 2.4.18 I'm assuming you're meaning Maya the 3D rendering package? If so, is it a native Linux app or are you trying it in WINE? Unless it's doing a lot of odd version specific things there's not a lot of likelihood it will run any differently on 7.3 versus 8.0

Hehe, good to hear that there's not much difference between the two versions
I've thought that the downgrade would knock me back to the stoneage

To the question about maya:

I'm a native Maya for Windows user since dont know when, but because I dont want to stick to Windows any more
I've grabbed the special linux version that Alias|Wavefront is supplying - so, I'm definetely using a linux-only version.
Of course it's not possible to "emulate" such a complex program with wine

A|W set up an internet page with some details about the
best hardware / software for the linux version and the thing that worries me is,
that they have tested and certified it for RH7.3 and maybe
that's the source of the problem, because right now I'm using RH8...

That's why I'm now downloading 7.3... (damn... again 3 cd's...)
and i REALLY hope that it works with this distro!

For any of those who know linux so well, maybe the A|W site
gives you the info what the problem is.
Some folks talked about a wrong gcc version in RH8 (whatever that is ) and so on...
Anyway, here's the site:

Perhaps a bit of details on exactly what's going wrong are in order...
