Question about update-checking syntax for all distros

I'm working on a desktop widget, and one of the features I'd like to add is a display showing whether any packages need updating. The complicated thing about this, of course, is that each distro has its own command for doing this.

In Fedora, the command I'm using as a base is "c=$(yum -d 0 check-update | wc -l);echo $((c?c-1:0)) updates available". What is the equivalent command to this, for anyone experienced in other distros?
