Problems with Suse Linux v9.0 and v2.6 Kernel
Hello,
Current
Distribution: Suse Linux 9.0.
Kernel version 2.4.xx-athlon...
In order to get a "true" 64 bit system one has to apply patches
from the site listed below.
Hardware:
AMD64 3200
chip set: nVidia nforce3 150
1GB DDRAM.
I have been trying to upgrade my Shuttle System from kernel version 2.4 to v2.6. I have downloaded the latest stable kernel v2.6.5. I have applied the patches listed at:
ftp://ftp.x86-64.org/pub/linux-x86_64/v2.6/
x86_64-2.6.1rc1-1.bz2 to
...
x86_64-2.6.5rc3-1.bz2
The kernel boots up but then stops with a
vfs failure. Apparently there is a problem with reading the file system,
because the ram-disk is now handled differently, than with kernel version
2.4.xx.
I have read things like the version of mkinitrd that shipped with Suse Linux
9.0 needs to be replaced. What package of utilities is this part of? modutils?
Has anyone done this upgrade? Is is a simple as install a new version of
mkinitrd, apply the x86_64 patches, and it will work, or is it more involved?
I have read posts about the redhat manual workaround for a non AMD 64 system and it looks like it rather complicated.
Thanks in advance?
