problems un/installing .deb packages

A long time ago i installed proftpd, after i stopped using it, i decided to uninstall it, but for some reason i can't.
Neither from APT nor the package manager will uninstall it.
I get :
Removing proftpd ...
dpkg:error processing proftpd ( --remove):
subprocessing post-removal script returned error exit status 10
Errors were encountered while processing:
proftpd
E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
rod@debian:

this is preventing me from updating or "apt-getting" new packages
every time i try to do it, i get the same error before installation (it actually stops it)
Has any debian user come across this or you reckon this could be a bug in the uninstallation scripts just like it mentioned before?

You have to use dpkg.
Try dpkg -remove proftpd

And be shure thatīs itīs not running, or if it tries to stop another running process, be shure that the service IS running.

I tried myself to remove netsaint, but made the same problem, it turned out that it wanted to stop apache, and if there where no apache to stop it made the error.

tried it, did get the same

Now i get something different:

apt-get -f install;echo RESULT=$?

Try dpkg with the -force options - that usually works for me.

Rodcl 11-09-2002 01:54 PM

tried the -force option, still the same

The worst I had to do so far was to look for the executable - whereis proftp (in your case) and delete the sucker. After that try dpkg -P and -force or combinations or it.
Had a problem like yours with java and that did it.
