Out of this list, which distro would you choose?

I've looked at distrowatch's top 10 fave Distros, and I've picked the ones that looked the best. Now, w/ out downloading every 700mb ISO, I'm asking you all whick distro you would go with.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 w/ a copy of XP. Windows got a screwed up, and I installed XP again, and now it is even more messed up. So I thought... This'll be the first time install linux on a decent pc.

Specs:
Intel Celeron 2.4GHz
512MB (speed 266 and 300... seems stable)
30GB harddrive
Onboard intel video, soundmax audio
Linksys WUSB54G (lets see If I can linux to actually work with this thing!)
CD-ROM drive

EDIT: Lol, forgot the list... I did make a poll.

List:
FreeBSD
Mepis
Gentoo
Fedora 5
SuSE
Mandriva

Since you don't provide a list to choose from, I guess I get to just recommend the best ... Debian.

Netinstal .iso (all you need, if you have a broadband connection) ... about 100 MB

He did, its a poll, look at the top of the page, and debian isnt on the list. Because slackware isnt on that list, id say freebsd.

Wasn't there when I first opened the thread ... Must have added it on the Edit. Good thing I got there first since Debian is not included.

No, the poll was there the whole time, but the list in the thread was later. Maybe there was some kinda lag or something?...

FreeBSD isn't Linux, but I guess I'd choose that or Gentoo since I quite liked both when I used them.

AAnarchYY 08-06-2006 04:17 PM

True freebsd isnt linux, but it is on the list :p

Nylex 08-06-2006 04:18 PM

Why is FreeBSD there and not Slackware?

Apparently he just chose out of the top 10 on distrowatch, and slack is at 11

colinstu 08-06-2006 04:20 PM

I'm looking for something that I don't have to do a lot a code/cammand line work. I'm okay for none GUI installs, but I want it to have a UI, like KDE.

EDIT: I said I looked at the top 10 list, and narrowed it down.

AAnarchYY 08-06-2006 04:21 PM

Then freebsd is not what you want, it's not very gui, atleast not last i used it. But you can still have kde in it.

Edit: I saw that, i was restating it as to answer nylex's question asking why slack wasnt on the list

Voted for Suse, but only because it's good for new users. I don't personally run any of the listed distros although I have used all of them at one time or another.

slackhack 08-06-2006 05:09 PM

probably mepis, if it could be converted easily to debian. :D

mike160 08-06-2006 05:53 PM

Suse 10.1 FTW !!! Should work good with your system, and I know not everyone likes XGL but if you upgrade the video to somthing decent you will get the added functionality & coolness of XGL. !!!

later

For a newbie that doesn't want to get into a lot of CLI work right off the bat I'd suggest either Mepis or SuSe. Of the two, I would prefer Mepis as it's Debian based and makes system upgrades a bit easier.
