Nvidia Geforce 6600 Slackware 12.2 install issue

Fresh slackware12.2 install on Intel BTX915G, 800fsb, PentiumR4 3.20ghz, 2048Mb

After installing the Nvidia -Linux-x86/185.18.36-pkg1.run for Geforce 6600 NV43 rev a2 when I statx - i get only a pointer and black screen.

(ww) directory "/usr/share/fonts/local? does not exist.
Entry deleted from path.

No screens found

Unable t connect to xserver

Incorrect font server

No Permission or does not exist

2. Xorg was generated by Nvidia install...
Identifer is still "Vesa Framebuffer"
Driver: "nvidia"
If I try to change Identifer I just get xorg errors

how do i fix this /usr/share/font/local issue? The user is in /etc/group for normal user privilages i even added them to games and gdm.

Checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf Files (Section)

I do have
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local"

Put "Speedo" at the end of list as suggested in Section Instructions.

Did notice in "Extensions" (Section)

#Load "Speedo"
Load "GLX"

Should I put uncomment "Speedo" and/or put it after
Load "GLX"? As well? I only put "Speedo" at the end of the FontPath list.

I also tried changing:
Driver "nvidia" to
Driver "nv"
All this did was start Kde Wizard, then went to initializing service, then a black screen with mouse pointer on screen ------- instead of:
Just initializing service
then blackscreen with mouse pointer on screen...

Added a driver error to xorg.0.log
---------------------

This error is documented for Ubanto but I found no resolution.

Can someone point me to a tutorial about installing or activating /usr/share/font/local?
How does this directory get initiated? Can I creat it, if so how? thanks

Ok.. i am reading some font configuration files and i see no mention of a /usr/share/fonts/local directory.

I see references to /usr/local/share/fonts ... Is there suposed to be a /usr/share/fonts/local directory and why wld i be missing it?

Chnged xorg.conf settings and icewm works.. just kde goes to a black screen. /var/log/Xorg.0.log reports the following issues:
(ww) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/local/" does not exist.
Entry deleted from font path
(ww) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/CID" does not exist

Slackware12.2 32bit/ GeForce6600 - is now running KDE3.5 + XFCE 4.4.3 - Hope this cuts someone else's setup time down. Thanks to all those that work so hard to support linux users like me.

After 3 reinstalls, checking and rechecking that Xorg was not running in the background during install, checking the huge smp kenrnel + src and kernel headers were present, chmod +x the driver before install, being ignored, admonished, for my lack of slackware skill. 2.5 weeks lapsed enough time for NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run supporting GeForce6600 NV43 to be now included the new NVIDIA 190.42 Update Driver, adding support for the following GPUs:
New Driver works right after install but xorg.conf still requires configuration - and there are still errors reported at shutdown.

Another Possible Solution

I understand you already solved this problem for yourself but I also had the missing font warning which stopped me from loading x. I managed to solve it but in a different way. This is for anyone else who may have this problem.

If you try to start x and it crashes leaving a log file saying your missing directories, (such as in the in the /usr/share/fonts directory), you can create the font directories yourself.

I solved my issue by making the directories that the /var/log/Xorg.0* log file said were missing with mkdir.

In the previous case:

mkdir /usr/share/fonts/local

would have worked fine. The next stop is to make it a font directory with:

mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/local

Complete the above for each directory that is said to be missing. I hope this helps someone else.
