Nvidia Geforce 6600 Slackware 12.2 install issue
Fresh slackware12.2 install on Intel BTX915G, 800fsb, PentiumR4 3.20ghz, 2048Mb
After installing the Nvidia -Linux-x86/185.18.36-pkg1.run for Geforce 6600 NV43 rev a2 when I statx - i get only a pointer and black screen. (ww) directory "/usr/share/fonts/local? does not exist. Entry deleted from path. No screens found Unable t connect to xserver Incorrect font server No Permission or does not exist 2. Xorg was generated by Nvidia install... Identifer is still "Vesa Framebuffer" Driver: "nvidia" If I try to change Identifer I just get xorg errors |
seems like i have a directory issue:
ww /usr/share/fonts/local is not loading when I try to run kde with startx and i don't know howto fix this. I did a full install. Can someon point me in the right direction, please? thanks |
how do i fix this /usr/share/font/local issue? The user is in /etc/group for normal user privilages i even added them to games and gdm.
Checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf Files (Section) I do have FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local" Put "Speedo" at the end of list as suggested in Section Instructions. Did notice in "Extensions" (Section) #Load "Speedo" Load "GLX" Should I put uncomment "Speedo" and/or put it after Load "GLX"? As well? I only put "Speedo" at the end of the FontPath list. I also tried changing: Driver "nvidia" to Driver "nv" All this did was start Kde Wizard, then went to initializing service, then a black screen with mouse pointer on screen ------- instead of: Just initializing service then blackscreen with mouse pointer on screen... Added a driver error to xorg.0.log --------------------- This error is documented for Ubanto but I found no resolution. Can someone point me to a tutorial about installing or activating /usr/share/font/local? How does this directory get initiated? Can I creat it, if so how? thanks |
Ok.. i am reading some font configuration files and i see no mention of a /usr/share/fonts/local directory.
I see references to /usr/local/share/fonts ... Is there suposed to be a /usr/share/fonts/local directory and why wld i be missing it? |
Did i put this question in the wrong forum?

Chnged xorg.conf settings and icewm works.. just kde goes to a black screen. /var/log/Xorg.0.log reports the following issues:
(ww) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/local/" does not exist. Entry deleted from font path (ww) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/CID" does not exist |
Slackware12.2 32bit/ GeForce6600 - is now running KDE3.5 + XFCE 4.4.3 - Hope this cuts someone else's setup time down. Thanks to all those that work so hard to support linux users like me.
After 3 reinstalls, checking and rechecking that Xorg was not running in the background during install, checking the huge smp kenrnel + src and kernel headers were present, chmod +x the driver before install, being ignored, admonished, for my lack of slackware skill. 2.5 weeks lapsed enough time for NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run supporting GeForce6600 NV43 to be now included the new NVIDIA 190.42 Update Driver, adding support for the following GPUs: New Driver works right after install but xorg.conf still requires configuration - and there are still errors reported at shutdown. http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...32_190.42.html GeForce G102M GeForce GT 220 GeForce G210 GeForce G210M GeForce GT 230M GeForce GT 240M GeForce GTS 250M GeForce GTS 260M GeForce 200 series: GT 220, GTX 260, G210, GTX 280, GTX 285, GTX 295, GTX 275, GTS 250 GeForce 200M series: GTX 260M, GTX 280M GeForce 100 series: GT 130, GT 120, GT 140, G 100 GeForce 100M series: G 102M GeForce 9 series: 9300 GS, 9500 GT, 9600 GSO, 9400 GT, 9500 GS, 9300, 9800 GT, 9600 GT, 9200, 9100, 9400, 9800 GX2, 9300 GE, 9600 GS, 9800 GTX/GTX+, 9300 SE, 9600 GSO 512 GeForce 9M series: 9400M G, 9700M GT, 9600M GS, 9800M GS, 9700M GTS, 9300M GS, 9800M GT, 9400M, 9650M GT, 9650M GS, 9500M GS, 9800M GTS, 9300M G, 9500M G, 9100M G, 9600M GT, 9200M GS, 9800M GTX GeForce 8 series: 8100 / nForce 720a, 8600 GS, 8800 Ultra, 8600 GT, 8300 GS, 8800 GTX, 8600 GTS, 8400, 8800 GTS 512, 8300, 8500 GT, 8800 GTS, 8200, 8200 / nForce 730a, 8400 GS, 8800 GT, 8800 GS, 8400 SE GeForce 8M series: 8800M GS, 8800M GTX, 8400M GS, 8600M GT, 8200M G, 8400M G, 8400M GT, 8700M GT GeForce 7 series: 7800 SLI, 7900 GS, 7100 GS, 7500 LE, 7050 PV / NVIDIA nForce 630a, 7800 GS, 7025 / NVIDIA nForce 630a, 7350 LE, 7050 / NVIDIA nForce 610i, 7900 GTX, 7300 GT, 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 630i, 7600 GT, 7550 LE, 7300 SE / 7200 GS, 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 620i, 7900 GT/GTO, 7300 GS, 7950 GX2, 7600 LE, 7600 GS, 7150 / NVIDIA nForce 630i, 7300 LE, 7950 GT, 7650 GS, 7050 / NVIDIA nForce 630i, 7800 GTX GeForce Go 7 series: Go 7800 GTX, Go 7900 GS, Go 7900 GTX, Go 7950 GTX GeForce 6 series: 6800 XE, 6200, 6150, 6100 nForce 400, 6700 XL, 6800 GT, 6250, 6500, 6150LE / Quadro NVS 210S, 6610 XL, 6800 GS, 6100, 6200 A-LE, 6800 Ultra, 6800, 6200SE TurboCache, 6600 LE, 6100 nForce 405, 6600 VE, 6800 XT, 6150SE nForce 430, 6150 LE, 6600, 6600 GT, 6800 LE, 6100 nForce 420, 6800 GS/XT, 6200 LE, 6200 TurboCache Quadro FX series: FX 3800, FX 1400, FX 4800, FX 5600, FX 5800, FX 3500, FX 1500, FX 550, FX 1700, FX 370, FX 1800, FX 4600, CX, FX 580, FX 560, FX 380, FX 4000, FX 4500, FX 540, FX 570, FX 370 Low Profile, FX 350, FX 4700 X2, FX 3700, FX 3400/4400, FX 4500 X2, FX 3450, FX 5500 Quadro FX Notebook series: FX 2700M, FX 570M, FX 360M, FX 1700M, FX 1600M, FX 370M, FX 3600M Quadro NVS series: NVS 420, NVS 295, NVS 450, NVS 280, NVS 285, NVS 440, NVS 210, NVS 290 ION series: ION GPU Computing Processor series: Tesla C1060 |
Another Possible Solution
I understand you already solved this problem for yourself but I also had the missing font warning which stopped me from loading x. I managed to solve it but in a different way. This is for anyone else who may have this problem.
If you try to start x and it crashes leaving a log file saying your missing directories, (such as in the in the /usr/share/fonts directory), you can create the font directories yourself. I solved my issue by making the directories that the /var/log/Xorg.0* log file said were missing with mkdir. In the previous case: mkdir /usr/share/fonts/local would have worked fine. The next stop is to make it a font directory with: mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/local Complete the above for each directory that is said to be missing. I hope this helps someone else. |
