Not Another Distro Comparison...
 

Well, it's that time of year again where I consider other distributions. Currently I am using Mandriva 2005 LE. I like using it, but always consider using other distributions. Here is what I am looking for:

1. Fast boot (Mandriva seems to take longer than an old 700MHz laptop I have running Windoze).
2. Bleeding edge (Mandriva doesn't seem to be very bleeding edge).
3. KDE - Latest version


Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try?

You might enjoy the book "De-Gunking Linux."

Mandriva's latest version is 2005LE. 2006 is still under testing. They have released two "relase candidates", but have not said when they will pubilsh 2006.

Scheduled to be released tomorrow 9/20, Add a week at the latest there still having issues.Haven't tested any of the RC's but have heard nothing but good things about this release.

slackware has just been released. But, its C libraries are not i585 optimised. So software like SYBASE will have probs.

Strange, actually I heard that Mandriva boots really quickly. Maybe you need to disable some of the services you don't need? (it should be somewhere under System settings/ Server settings => Services)

What is this 'Fast Boot' and how do I get one?
 

While installing the new Mandriva 2006, one of the "while you are waiting" blurbs advertises something called "Fast Boot" ... that's all it says, just a slide with that name on it, like it was a feature.

So I asked google :study: and that turned up a list of tips for other distros telling how adding BOOT=PARALLEL to /etc/sysconfig/boot would cause init.d to run as many processes as it can as parallel processes.

this is interesting, especially since the bloat of Linux now means it takes as much as 10 minutes for my 700MHz laptop to boot, and that's with the bare minimum of services enabled!

Unfortunately, Mandriva has no /etc/sysconfig/boot file, and there's no further mention of this 'feature' anywhere that I've thus far looked in the docs :cry:

Anyone know what a Fast Boot is, or how you might turn it on? Are there any other good tips for speeding up the startup/shutdown on a laptop?

Some days I really miss RedHat 5.0.
