Question Newbie's project #1 help !!

I need help, and really appreciated your help to me.....

My friends and family members are all upset about getting pc hacked, virus infested,trojean,worm,bot.........etc.
(WINDOWS XP,2000)from home computer and office.

Someone told them that unix(linux)is much better OS then windows for against all kind of hackers,virus....things so it should be very strong as rock...Therefore, they should try it to see it.
Now, they want to be convinced and hope that they finaly replace all of the os in their office.

How do you think about which distro or unix variant they should try to believe in. except mac osx.
Let me tell you,They are totally Newbies,beginner....in the computer hardware/software/os fields......

Starting out

Everyone has their own opinions but Suse Mandrake and Fedora are great for starting. Check out Distrowatch. Has links to the sites/isos. And patients is the key.

Give them Knoppix to play with. You can probably download the ISO image from Linux ISO or the main website.

Knoppix is a full featured Linux distribution with great hardware detection that runs completely off the CD. It will do absolutely nothing to their hard drive, and runs in a KDE environment with lots of utilities. That way, they can use Linux and decide if they like it. If they do, they can install Knoppix to their hard drive (it comes with a utility to do that), or they can try a different distribution.

For live CDs: Knoppix, MandrakeMove, Suse Live CD or Mepis Live CD. Hands down, pick one of them. If I had to pick one of the four, I would try Knoppix.

It's a distribution-related question, so it has been moved.

Knoppix is good, really good. But it also has a lot of redundant applications, which while good in principle, can be daunting for a newbie.

Instead I'd recommend PCLinuxOS.
The menus have a much more simple layout IMHO, and the applications are also more up to date than Knoppix (at the moment).

If you have problems with PCLinuxOS (and you might, it's still in beta testing), then I'd stick with Knoppix, which is very reliable.
