New Distro

Hi I am thinking of starting to get back into Linux, I have had enough of paying for windows etc...

I have got a few question for you experts

1. which is the best distro, I have tried red hat but didn't really like it. SuSe was OK but the sound was messed up (SD live Digital)
2. I need to sync my windows smart phone (yes i know windows/Linux will probably not mix, but there might be a solution),
3. Will the distros have bluetooth support?
4. I will be using this mostly for gaming (hopefully i will get HL so work)
5. A bit of web design, so I need to know a good program for this.

Thanks for any help guys

Hi Moving to Linux - Distributions.

1. Assuming you mean SB Live, you really shouldn't have much problem with that card. They are well supported in Linux at this point, it may have just been a slight adjustment necessary in the mixer controls.

2. Good Luck.

3. There is bluetooth support in Linux, however you will need to research to see if it supports the usage you desire.

4. What types of games? Do you already have Linux versions/patches for these games? Gentoo has been very good at building around a gaming platform.

5. Most applications can be searched for at www.freshmeat.net I'd suggest looking at "Quanta". Excellent html editing app IMHO.

Cool

IF you've done Linux before and know what you're doing, and you said you are a gamer, gentoo is quick!

If you are new to Linux, you need something easier to install, SuSE's probably OK but before switching to Gentoo I used Mandrake 9.1

You should have both of them loaded, because GNOME-based programs can run in KDE provided the GNOME libraries are present, and vice versa. In Mandrake (dunno about SuSE, definitely NOT in Gentoo) the menuing system means that you get the same menu items for both systems so you can select either on startup, whatever takes your fancy.

Personally I prefer KDE but really it will probably come down to the eye candy aspect.
