I would like to install linux on a Toshiba Satellite, with something like 100MHz processor (66 I think, maybe more), 20MB ram, 365MB hd and a external PCMCIA cd-rom. I can't get it to boot from the cd, so I'm looking for a distro which is available on floppies. I googled for it but found mostly mini-distros which loaded themselves onto the RAM, I installed Monkey linux, it worked, but I didn't like the fact that it kept DOS/windows, as well as the windowmanager wasn't much fun...
I run Slackware on my two normal PCs, so I'm looking for something fun (nice gui etc) rather than a hardcore command-line based distro. I would like something a little larger than monkey linux (more apps, better windowmanager), I've got 365mb hd-space to waste, so about 100mb's of distro/apps would be perfect. something like an early release of slax if that's possible.
Give Deli Linux a shot. I've got it to run in a Compaq 166MHZ/32RAM without any problem. It's based on Slackware 5.x, so if you need an application, it's just a matter to download and install the package from Slackware's ftp. That includes from compilers and text editors, to Apache Webserver.
It's not only floppies install though, but since you have a CD-rom, you could make your computer boot from the hd and copy the installation files from Deli to your HD and run the script from there .
Although it comes with IceWM as the Window Manager, it took me no more then a couple of minutes to download and install KDE 1.x. Here is a screenshot of my computer:
it would be really good if you had a fast, reliable internet conenction. that way, you could either do an ftp install of most distros, or a mini-distro but then add wm's and apps after it's installed.
when you say "nice gui," it's hard to figure out what wm would be best. in desktop environments, kde has a nice gui obviously, but i know that laptop won't handle it. do you want something sort of in between performance and looks? a little more description and i'll be able to give some input.
Thanks... I'll try Deli Linux... yet open for other recommendations.
Sether:
I actually don't have what I need to connect it to my network, that's why I'm looking for distros which are available on floppies.
yes, something in between is what I'm looking for. I've only used KDE, Gnome and Fluxbox earlier, so I don't really know a whole lot of what's available... I know fluxbox is small, if it is possible to run on an old machine like this and compatible with a small distro, that would be perfect. Do you think Deli linux with fluxbox would work, or do you have a better suggestion (I'm willing to try a lot of distros, that's part of the fun as well)? Thanks for your help...
that'll work. i don't know of any distros off the top of my head that are only on floppies. like MegaMan X said, Deli Linux comes with IceWM, which is actually pretty good (at least the versions i've tried). it's somewhat minimalistic and fast, but at the same time it has a wide range of themes and has an alright gui.
